Capoeira Society

Capoeira is a fusion of combat, music, songs and dance. It is a unique martial art with a deep routed history in the black slavery in Brazil.

Africans were brought over to Brazil in the 15th and 16th centuries by portuguese. The poor conditions caused the slaves to rebel and flee into the forests. Capoeira (literally meaning low growing shrub) was developed as a way for the ex slaves to defend themselves against their former masters.
