Latin American Society
We always try to create a friendly atmosphere where everyone can enjoy and feel comfortable to express and have fun at the same time and learn from people of other countries.
We hold meetings every Tuesday from 7.30 to 11 pm, at the Missing Link, Darwin College, where Cuban salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Mambo and Cha-cha-cha classes take place. It is divided in two levels, beginners and intermediates. We provide drinks and nibbles.
On Thursdays every two weeks, from 7 to 10 pm, we have film nights at the Darwin Lecture Theatre 1, we show Latin American films and documentaries usually with English subtitles.
We also have Spanish speaking sessions and socials at pubs in town and on campus*.* These meetings take place usually once a month on Thursday or Friday, from 7 to 9 pm. This is ideal for the people who want to practice their Spanish skills.
We usually gather on Fridays at the Cuban Bar in town, where they have live band from 10 pm to 2 pm.
Every year at the end of October and beginning of November we set a display of the Mexican Day of the Dead, with decoration and offerings of food, drinks and sweets to commemorate those beloved ones who have passed away.
Also in February each year we hold a big Brazilian Carnival party with all kinds of Latin rythms, Samba, Salsa, Merengue, even English and Greek pop music find a space in it. In past years we had the Capoeira society giving and exhibition and we intend to do it next year again and also we plan to have a live band playing some Brazilian music.
