Critical Lawyers Group

'One must start by knowing what is going on, by freeing oneself from the mystified delusions embedded in our consciousness by the liberal legal world view.'

Alan D. Freeman, ''Truth and Mystification in Legal Scholarship', Yale Law Journal, 1981, vol. 90 p. 1229

CLG started at the Kent Law School and the National Critical Lawyers Group is the umbrella organisation for a number of CLG's that extend across Universities in England and Scotland (which form the National Critical Lawyers’ Group) - although Kent remains the most notorious.

‘Think outside the box…’
The CLG brings together academics, practitioners, politicians and students in an explosive forum designed to extend the critical teaching that is fostered at Kent. By examining the complex role of law within social structures, the CLG remains the main alternative to 'Black Letter' legal education, which traditionally projects law as politically neutral.

A Message from the President

Our society is called the Critical Lawyers Group and encompasses all that I believe to be good about law. By this I mean to say that CLG enables students to actively participate in debates on relevant and important issue surrounding law, with the added benefit of our Society widening the scope and perceptions of law in the sense that it encourages fellow students to think of law within the political and social sphere to which law is inextricably linked.

Our Society also holds talks with this aim in mind from lecturers, pressure groups and lawyers; whilst also providing a social remit whereby students from various courses and stages in the law course can get to know each other.

My initial interest began with the debates, I enjoy being able to vocalize my opinions and found that CLG facilitated this. The society is open to all law students and any non law student that has an interest in the topics we discuss which are extremely wide-ranging.

I would strongly recommend my society due to everything I have already stated and because of so many other things.
Another important reason is because of the fact that this law Society provides a different perspective to law. Finally, CLG provides the much needed service of aiding those who wish to use a Law Degree as a springboard to alternative legal careers instead of the normal career route of going on to take the BVC or LPC to become either a barrister or solicitor.
The CLG will seek
-          To provide a discussion forum for organisations and campaigns concerned with struggles existing in law, legal education and practice
-          To foster debate on the role and limits of law in a capitalist society and to consider the potentiality of a legal education and practice in the interests of the disadvantaged and oppressed
-          To develop a theoretically grounded critique of orthodox legal studies
-          To encourage and to initiate alternative forms of legal education and practice
-          To invite speakers, engage in critical debate and undertake practical work
