Creative Writing Society
Who we are:
The Creative Writing Society here at the University of Kent is a society which welcomes anyone who is interested in writing! We welcome poetry, short stories, novels, lyrics and even rap.
We welcome writers of all abilities, whether you are a seasoned writer, would like to try for the first time or just like to dabble in it now and then. Most authors recommend feedback as a means of improving your writing, finding faults in work that would have otherwise gone unnoticed and for picking up new styles of writing. This type of experience is necessary to take steps towards making yourself publishable, and this is exactly what we offer at the society.
Do not be scared off however by the idea of people criticising your work, as you can request before you read your work out how harsh you would like the criticism, or if there is something specific you would like us to look out for. Reading your personal writing out in front of a group of strangers can also be quite daunting, so if you would prefer not to, you can pass around a paper copy and have people write their comments on the paper, or even request someone else to read it out for you, the committee especially will always be most welcome to do so.
What we do:
Other than our meetings held twice a week, we also hold a number of writing associated events and socials. Our events and socials include:
- Hosting word slams/ open mic nights (involving bringing your poetry and reading it aloud at Rutherford bar), as well as attending such nights in Canterbury city.
-We attend one day and weekend workshops in and around London for an added fee. These workshops can vary from self-editing your novel, character development, beginning poetry, how to write stand out fantasy, and how to get published fast.
-We host a Games Night once a month, at which we play writing and vocabulary games and offer a prize to however gets voted as being the best contestant for that evening. Prices vary from vouchers to on campus bars and Blackwell’s bookshop to free goodies from student friendly shops in Canterbury.
-Our socials can vary from our themed parties (including a Murder Mystery Night, for which you write your own character profile then come dressed and acting like your character) to our group pub crawls, movie nights, film goings, and locations visits (such as Paris).
Membership is £5 to join. If you require any more information please contact me on president.cws@googlemail.com.
