Free Software Society

We are a group of people campaigning for the use of free (as in
freedom) software, to distribute free software, and to help others use free software.

We define free software in the same way as the Free Software Foundation (see http://www.fsf.org), and urge all to defend these basic software freedoms by opposing software patents in the EEC and opposing Digital Rights Management (DRM) by promoting alternatives.

We promote the use of Linux in particular, and wish to see it used as an alternative to the proprietary operating systems (such as Windows variants and Apple OSX) throughout the University of Kent.

Future projects include providing tuition in the use of free software/software libre, and providing computer systems for disadvantaged students who are members of the Society, at low cost, complete with a version of Linux.
