Kung Fu Society
Welcome to the UKC Kung Fu Society. We provide professional teaching and training opportunities in Kung Fu, for anyone interested in learning the art from the beginning or continuing it at UKC. Your experience or ability is irrelevant to joining the club, as we can provide something for people of all levels.
Kung Fu has many branches, the styles that we train in are Shaolin Wushu and Wing Chun. Shaolin Wushu is a dynamic style mainly based on animal forms, and was developed in the famous Shaolin monastery many centuries ago. It incorporates strong low stances, fast high kicking and the learning of how to use weapons such as the broadsword and staff. Wing Chun is a very direct and scientifically-founded style designed for a smaller person to overcome a larger aggressor using structure, deflection, speed and explosive power. Wing Chun was made famous by Bruce Lee who was an exponent in the art.
Our Instructor
Our instructor is Sifu Barry Phelan. He is the head instructor of the Wu Gong Academy, who we are affiliated with and whose syllabus we teach. Sifu Barry Phelan is a professional martial arts teacher who has won many national titles and has credentials too numerous to mention here. To find out more go to: www.wugong.co.uk
Training Times
We train on campus twice a week:
FRIDAY
Shaolin Wushu: 5pm-6pm in the Main Sports Hall
Wing Chun: 6pm-7pm in the Main Sports Hall
WEDNESDAY
Shaolin Wushu: 7pm-8.30pm in the Darwin Missing Link
Wing Chun: 8.30pm-9.30pm in the Darwin Missing Link
In addition, Sifu Barry Phelan holds further classes open to the normal public in his gym in Littlebourne where members of the Kung Fu Society are welcome to train in. For more information go to www.wugong.co.uk
Socials
After every Friday session at 7pm we have a few drinks at the K-Bar to wind down after training. There will be larger socials arranged throughout the year as well.
