CHILDREN AND YOUTH WORK

Allies for Kids In Care - Volunteers are needed to act as 'Allies' or visitors for Looked After Children, i.e. children who are in the care system.  Allies acts as friends, informal mentors, advisors and role models for these children who may have little to no contact with their own family.  Allies is based primarily in London, but occassionally will have a child placed in Kent.  Own transport, or a willingness to travel is essential.  A CRB check will be required.

 

Brownies and Guiding- Local Brownie, Rainbow and Guide packs require volunteers to help run their services to girls between the ages of 4yrs old and 21 years old. The Guide movement aims to provide young women with skills, the ability to cope in any situation and a sense of community and social responsibility. It also provides exciting and unique challenges for girls of all ages.Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials

 

Canterbury Youth Club with the Scrine Foundation - Volunteers are needed to help with the Twighlight After Schools Club, who helps children who are impoverished, marginalised or experiencing inequality.  The Youth Club runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  The children can be quite boistrous, so firm personalities are best suited!  Application Forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.

 

 

E-Mentoring - Looking for student volunteers to act as mentors to students from the Folkestone Academy as e-mentors, so you can do it from the Library, or even volunteer in bed!  Great opportunity for time-poor students.  If you are interested, please contact Sam on S.A.Walker@kent.ac.uk.  THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY PUT ON HOLD

 

Kent Kids Miles of Smiles- is a registered charity, it's sole beneficiary being Footprints.  It is a home designed to provide that extra special environment and care for children with special needs, including profound and multiple disabilities.  Current roles include Fundraising, Managing Activities, Cooking and Cleaning.  Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.

  

Prince Of Wales Youth Club- The Prince of Wales Youth Club is a community project, which runs to provide children with after school and holiday recreation and activities in a supervised environment. Volunteers are needed to run arts, crafts and sports sessions, and to socialise and work with the children.  Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials

 

Northgate Early Years Project - The Northgate EYP provides support to families with babies, toddlers and primary school children. Volunteers are a key part of the Projects survival, and are needed in all areas at all 7 sites.  Application Forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials

 

Rainer Mentoring Scheme- Volunteers are needed to train to be mentors for teenagers and young adults within the Canterbury area. Most youths needing mentoring have already been involved in crime and social disorder, or have emotional and behavioural problems. Full training, support and expenses are provided.  Application Forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials

 

Riverside Youth Centre - located next to Kingsmead Leisure Centre and Sainsburys, Riverside acts as a Centre for young people aged 14-16 who have been exculded from school.  They are currently looking for mentors for the children in school work (art, literacy, numeracy) as well as running sporting activities with the young people.  You need to be able to be firm with the children and have good maturity levels as they can be challenging.  A great opportunity for people looking at teaching, social work, or psychology.  You will be supported by a staff member at all times.  A CRB check is required.  The Centre is open at the following days and times, and you can choose when you are available to attend within those times:

 

Mondays 9am - 1pm

Tuesdays 9am - 2.30pm

Wednesday's 9am - 2.30pm

Thursdays 9am, - 2.30pm

 

Schools - While we do have links with some schools in the area, there are currently very few volunteering opportunities within schools other than the lunchtime or afterschool clubs.  If you are desperate for a school placement though, please come in and see us and we will do our best to find one for you!

SNAAP - SNAAP provides advice and activities for children with special needs. Volunteers are needed for the fortnightly Youth Club, the fortnightly Sports Club, at Christmas time and ad hoc fun days and taster sessions.  Application Forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials

   

Young Carers - young carers are children who act as a full time carer to a family member who cannot take care of themselves.  Young Carers and Carers Voice exists to offer some relief for these children in the form of activities and a listening ear, and volunteers mentors are needed to help run the service.  Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials

Community Liaison Officers for CSR FM - If you would like to work with young people from all backgrounds then volunteering for CSR may be for you.  You don't have to go on air if you don't want to and you will have the chance to work for the country's first student-led community FM radio station.   CSR need volunteers to help out in all areas in their community team,  from leading youth groups, mentoring and more!  You will need a CRB check, but this is easy to obtain.  For more information, visit the Student Activities Centre or e-mail Becky on rsc7@kent.ac.uk
