31st May - Fun Run for the Royal Deaf School - Kent Union and the Royal Deaf School have paired up to bring another fun run to Kent University on Saturday 31st May! If you would like to run in either the 3 mile or the 1 mile options, please e-mail Emma Bourne on ebourne@royalschoolfordeaf.kent.sch.uk for fundraising and entry forms.
Campus Organic Garden - Are you looking for the opportunity to work in teams or pairs, learn useful skills, benefit wildlife conservation, get fit and do all this conveniently on campus whilst having the opportunity to earn yourself some healthy food in the process? Why not sign up to work with the wildlife conservation group and/or the Campus Organic Garden? We are looking for students who wish to get involved in whichever way suits them. So you can contribute physical work (lots needed!), campaigning and awareness activities, specific research studies and projects or even undertaking fundraising, business development opportunities or engage through the creative arts. Activities will be linked to the Personal Development Planning framework and training will be provided where necessary. If you are interested, please contact Becky on rsc7@kent.ac.uk. An introduction meeting is taking place on Friday 29th February from 12-2 in the Mandela Building Meeting Room. All interested students are welcome to attend.
Cancer Research Relay for Life - Taking place on September 13th and 14th September 2008 from 11am to 11am at the Canterbury High School Athletics Track (Body and Mind). Teams of 5-15 people raise money to be able to compete in a 24 hour relay race. One person from each team must be on the track at all times. Volunteers are needed to form the teams, organise the days from publicity to sourcing donations to organising entertainments, help out on the days and much more. There will be an information day on the 20th October from 12-2 and 5.30-7.30pm in the Invicta Room at Canterbury High School Athletics Track. Don't Dump That - Don't Dump That is a website that encourages people not to throw away things others can use, or to find things online that they need for free. It is growing quickly, and needs volunteers to help in all areas, from technical support to media relations to fundraising! Don't Dump That relies on a small group of volunteers to run the local forums, maintain the website, promote the organisation and deal with all the admin, and as they are rapidly expanding, they need more help! This is virtual volunteering, something you can do when you want, where you want!
Moderators: They need moderators for all areas where there are no forums already, including those marked with an orange flag on the website map
Asst Moderators: To help Moderators in many areas where there are forums already
Technical Team: Technical Admin needs people with computer skills to spread the workload and keep the website and forums running smoothly
Member Support Team: More members means more inquiries, and we need people to help members get the most out of Don'tDumpThat
Moderator Support Team: More forums means more moderators, and even Moderators need support - we need people to help them
Media and Marketing Team: They need people with PR experience or who want to gain experience to help them represent Don'tDumpThat in the media and to produce press releases, magazine articles and promotional materials
Fundraising: They need people to help them find funding and/or sponsorship to support Don'tDumpThat in the future
Admin Team: They need people to help with various admin tasks from time to time. If you have admin or clerical skills and can help on a regular or occassional basis, they would love to hear from you
Dragon Boat Racing is a lot of fun. As a competitor you will take part in several races, but also get to spend time relaxing, and being well looked after by the NCH team. As well as having a hospitality marquee for teams and their supporters, they will provide all our paddlers with delicious home-made refreshments throughout the day! Bands will play for your entertainment, there will be lots of stalls and games for all ages, and plenty of space for impromptu games of Frisbee and Football! Spectators and “cheerers” very welcome. You need a minimum of 16 rowers and 1 drummer to take part in the race (2 or 3 subs are also recommended). No experience is necessary, but rowers must be over 16yrs old. All you need to do to now is register your team with NCH. Headway House - Headway House works with people suffering from the effects of brain damage. They need volunteers to help with the running of various activities and fundraisers. Application Forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials
Kent Kids Miles of Smiles- is a registered charity, it's sole beneficiary being Footprints. It is a home designed to provide that extra special environment and care for childre with special needs, including profound and multiple disabilities. Current roles include Fundraising, Managing Activities, Cooking and Cleaning. Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials
Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre- The MS Therapy centre is an organisation which offers treatment, support and friendship for MS sufferers. The centre (based in Canterbury)would like volunteers to socialise with clients and to help with day-to-day running of the centre as well as fundraisers. RaG - Kent Union's fundraising arm organise events and do lots of silly things to raise money for various charities.
Rainer Mentoring Scheme- Volunteers are needed to train to be fundraisers for Rainer and mentors for teenagers and young adults within the Canterbury area. Most youths needing mentoring have already been involved in crime and social disorder, or have emotional and behavioural problems. Full training, support and expenses are provided. Red Cross - The Red Cross has multiple roles around helping people in crisis. Volunteers are needed for Peer Befriending, First Aid, Fundraising, Trasnport and Escort, Medical Loan, Caring for people in their own homes, Tracing and Messaging service, Fire Victim Support, Shop Work, Training, Youth Work, Thereputic Care, and all Volunteers will be given the opportunity to become part of the Emergency Response Team. Samaritans- The Samaritans are a national listening service for people in crisis or who just need someone to talk to. Volunteers are needed in the local branch in many roles, including telephone help-line operators (full training and support provided), fundraisers, publicity and marketing roles. Scrine Foundation - The Scrine Foundation is a charty that provides homeless people with opportunities to take part in activities. Volunteers are needed to help with the collection boxes, act as fundraisers, to act as a Big Issue Vendor Support, to help in the Book Palace, and there are other opportunities as and when need arises.
