CHUMS - CHUMS is a drop-in placement every Monday from 6-8pm in Canterbury which needs volunteers to befriend refugees.  Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.

 

Dover Detainee Centre - are looking for volunteer visitors to the Centre to speak to the refugees.  Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.

 

First Aid Group (Red Cross Society) - There is a First Aid Group on campus which offers first aid training and practical expereince and support in the field.  Membership costs £3 for the year, and includes all training, resources, assessment and qualification, as well as field work opportunities once qualified.  Join via the Kent Union Social Network

 

Kent Refugee Action Network - Looking for Volunteer Mentors to refugees.  Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.

 

Migrant Helpline - An organisation that trains people to be able to answer telephone queries from Migrants.  Application forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.

 

READ International  - READ International were first set up by students 4 years ago, and have since expanded into a large charity organisation that now operates out of 11 UK Universities, and even won Best New Charity in the UK Charity Times Awards.  They ask students to collect academic text books and organise to send them to Tanzania to help children and young people develop their education.  They need a team of 8-10 student volunteers from the Canterbury region to co-ordinate the Kent effort.  Roles also include 3 project leaders who manage a team of volunteers, and there is also the opportunity to go to Tanzania in the summer to distribute the books.  Each University aims to collect 25,000 books, so the teams of volunteers need to arrange storage, fundraise money to cover the cost of their project (aprox £7,500), arrange book collections from local schools, colleges etc.  Rob from READ International is coming to the campus on the 15th May at 4pm to answer any questions about what this role involves and also to give students more information about this fantastic opportunity.  If you would like to attend, e-mail rsc7@kent.ac.uk for meeting details.  If you are still interested in this placement but cannot make the meeting, e-mail rsc7@kent.ac.ukThis is an amazing opportunity for people interested in Business Management, Project Management, Fundraising, International Aid, team work or leadership.  You must be here 2008-2009 in order to be eligible for this opportunity.  

 

Red Cross - The Red Cross has multiple roles around helping people in crisis. Volunteers are needed for Peer Befriending, First Aid, Fundraising, Trasnport and Escort, Medical Loan, Caring for people in their own homes, Tracing and Messaging service, Fire Victim Support, Shop Work, Training, Youth Work, Thereputic Care, and all Volunteers will be given the opportunity to become part of the Emergency Response Team.  Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.

 

STAR (Student Action for Refugees) has teamed up with the Independent Asylum Commission (IAC) to create eleven exciting, flexible volunteering opportunities for students who are passionate about campaigning for the rights of refugees.  The Independent Asylum Commission is an indpendent citizens enquiry into the UK asylum system.  It has spent 18 months holding public hearings around the country and recieved written evidence from dozens of organisations and individuals.  It will publish its findings and final conclusions between March and July 2008.  STAR is a national charity supporting students and young people aged 16-25 to volunteer to achieve change for refugees.  This includes providing practical support to refugees in local communities, raising awareness of refugee issues and campaigning with and for the rights of refugees.  Each key student campaigner will receive high quality residentials training on effective local campaigning.  They will then be supported to work with each other and the STAR network to lead student campaigning on elements of the Independent Asylum Commission report that they feel passionate about.  The roles are open to anyone who will be a student in higher education during the 2008/09 academic year, with training taking place during the Spring of 2008.  There will be one Key Campaigner in each England Government region, plus Scotland and Wales.
