Allies for Kids in Care (CSV) - Volunteers are needed to act as 'Allies' or visitors for Looked After Children, i.e. children who are in the care system.  Allies acts as friends, informal mentors, advisors and role models for these children who may have little to no contact with their own family.  Allies is based primarily in London, but occassionally will have a child placed in Kent.  Own transport, or a willingness to travel is essential.  A CRB check will be required.

 

Canterbury Advocacy Project- The Canterbury Advocacy Project is a local organisation which works with adults with learning difficulties or mental health problems. The Project is looking for volunteers to work as advocates, which involves helping clients of the project in many ways. This could be assisting them with social benefit applications or legal issues, accompanying them to doctor or hospital appointments, helping them access local community and social services or simply befriending the client offering support and friendship.    Application Forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials

 

Canterbury Prison - The Prison is currently changing, and now houses Foreign National prisoners, serving less than 4 years, with an expectation of removal once the sentence is completed.  We are in the process of working closely with them to arrange new volunteering opportunities, which will be posted shortly.

 

Citizens Advice Bureau - CAB needs 3 volunteers  - a Social Policies Co-Ordinator, a Local Information Co-Ordinator and an administrator.  Full details and application forms in the Student Activities Centre.  A great opportunity for people looking at experience within the law or in advice work.  For more information, contact Sam on S.A.Walker@kent.ac.uk

Community Service Volunteers -Mentors

 

Community Liaison Officers for CSR FM - If you would like to work with young people from all backgrounds then volunteering for CSR may be for you.  You don't have to go on air if you don't want to and you will have the chance to work for the country's first student-led community FM radio station.   CSR need volunteers to help out in all areas in their community team,  from leading youth groups, mentoring and more!  You will need a CRB check, but this is easy to obtain.  For more information, visit the Student Activities Centre or e-mail Becky on rsc7@kent.ac.uk

 

Family Group Conference Advocates- Needed to help families prepare for Family Group Conferences. Good listening skills and emotional intelligence needed. Great roles for people looking at Social Care or Family Law.  Contact Details are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.  This opportunity is based in Tonbridge or Ashford, but an FGC can take place anywhere in Kent, therefore own transport or a willingness to travel is essential.

Rainer Mentoring Scheme- Volunteers are needed to train to be mentors for teenagers and young adults within the Canterbury area. Most youths needing mentoring have already been involved in crime and social disorder, or have emotional and behavioural problems. Full training, support and expenses are provided.  Application Forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials.  A CRB check will be required.

 

Riverside Youth Centre - located next to Kingsmead Leisure Centre and Sainsburys, Riverside acts as a Centre for young people aged 14-16 who have been exculded from school.  They are currently looking for mentors for the children in school work (art, literacy, numeracy) as well as running sporting activities with the young people.  You need to be able to be firm with the children and have good maturity levels as they can be challenging.  You will be supported by a staff member at all times.  A great opportunity for people looking at teaching, social work, or psychology.  A CRB check is required.  The Centre is open at the following days and times, and you can choose when you are available to attend within those times:

 

Mondays 9am - 1pm

Tuesdays 9am - 2.30pm

Wednesday's 9am - 2.30pm

Thursdays 9am, - 2.30pm

 

Special Constables - Special Constables work alongside the police to help make a difference to the parishes and urban areas of Kent.  Restrictions do apply, and a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week is expected.  Contact Details and application forms are available from the Student Activities Centre, above Essentials

 

St Martin's Psychiatric Hospital - Mentors are needed for young people aged 16-35 at the risk of social exclusion, most of whom have experienced mental health problems.  Full training provided.  A new programme of volunteer training is scheduled to start in January.

 

Young Carers - Mentors are needed for young people who act as carers to a family member unable to take care of themselves.  Full training provided.  While Young Carers is based in Herne Bay, the expectation is that you will be placed with a young person in or around Canterbury.  A CRB check is required.  Young Carers also need volunteer administrators for the service.
