International Students & Working in the UK

Most international students on a course of six months or more can work up to 20 hours a week in term time and unlimited hours during vacation periods.

If your passport states that you are ‘Prohibited’ from working, then you cannot take any form of paid or unpaid employment. If your passport is stamped ‘Restriction’ or says that you require permission of the Secretary of State, then you are now entitled to work. If you are unsure, please take your passport to the Jobshop office on campus in Canterbury.

You will need to apply for an NI number and your earnings will be taxable.

Further information and guidance can be obtained from UKCOSA (Council of Overseas Students Advice) on-line or on their telephone hotline: 020 7107 9922 (Monday-Friday, 13.00 – 17.00.)

You can pick-up a leaflet with some more information working in the UK as an international student at the Jobshop office on the Canterbury campus or by our noticeboards in the Pilkington Building, Medway.
