Who are we
Kent Union is the students’ union at the University of Kent and we are a registered charity led by students for students.
Our purpose is to improve the student experience and to help them reach their full potential during their time with us, and also once they’ve graduated and stepped into the wider world. We achieve this by empowering students to have a voice at University, to fulfil their potential and to get the most from their University experience.
What we do
To support our members, we run a free advice and welfare service, a Jobshop, nursery, and retail, catering and licensed outlets. These services and outlets provide students with opportunities to obtain paid part-time employment, by offering jobs either directly or through our Jobshop. In the past year £866,000 was put back into students’ pockets in wages to help them fund their time at University. Kent Union also operates a toolkit which helps students develop, understand and track the transferable skills they are developing through working or volunteering for the Union.
All profit generated by our activities is reinvested into helping students, but unfortunately this often falls short of the amount we need to deliver our services to our members and undertake new projects.
Interest amongst students taking part in our sports clubs, societies, community volunteering and student media continues to grow. In the year to 31 July 2015, our student volunteers committed an amazing 94,756 hours of their time to volunteering. With cuts to third sector funding, the work our volunteers do has become even more important. From storytelling with school children and organising environmental campaigns to running a sports club or society…our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.
In total, Kent Union has over 19,100 members and during the last year 7,695 individual students directly participated in Union life.
