Kent Union is a hugely diverse organisation; we provide services for all our 20,000 members across Canterbury and Medway.
A bit about our people
Around 750 people work for Kent Union during an average year and they are responsible for providing a fantastic range of services for students studying at the University of Kent.
Most of our staff roles are held by current students – We employ about 600 current students each year within our Outlets, and support 2,000+ volunteers. Our student staff are supported by around 130 permanent career staff who hold positions in our Outlets, as well as in the services we provide such as Advice, Activities and Student Media. We also have people working in our internal departments such as HR, Marketing and Finance. Every single member of our staff is crucial to the successful running of Kent Union and making our charity a fantastic place to work.
Kent Union is led by a Full-Time Officer Team, elected each year by our members, the students of the University of Kent: You. This team is supported by the Chief Executive and Directors who in turn lead the staff within their departments. We also have a Board of Trustees who oversee the running of our charity. This Board is made up of our elected Officer Team as well as External Trustees who have specialisms within particular areas.
We are proud of Kent Union’s values. They guide the way our staff work and how we choose to run our organisation. We’re always interested in hearing from individuals that share in our values and want to work for a forward thinking charity that is committed to ensuring all its people fulfil their potential.
Our values: Professional, Responsible, Inclusive, Democratic, Exceptional.
Why work for us?
Kent Union is a fantastic place to work. We’ve achieved a great deal in the last few years, more than doubling in size to our £10million turnover. We have won a Green Impact Gold award, and were re-accredited with Investor in People Gold status in December 2014, and were accredited with Leaders in Diversity in 2013; we were the first student’s union in the UK to Achieve Investing in Volunteers status and we have been included in the Sunday Times 100 Best Not-For-Profit Organisations To Work For, for 7 year, placed 25th for 2016.
We are very proud of the range of rewards and benefits we offer our staff. We work very hard to ensure our staff are healthy, happy and secure in their work.
We offer flexible working hours, including part-time, term-time only, annualised hours, time in lieu, home working, sabbatical breaks, duvet days and compressed hour options to ensure all our staff have the right balance in their lives. We also allow all our staff paid time off to take part in volunteering. All our career staff receive a 37 days annual leave each year, rising to 42 days after 5 years which includes generous break over the Christmas closure period.
We provide fantastic maternity, paternity, shared parental and adoption leave packages as well as offering childcare vouchers, and also a Workplace Nursery scheme for all our parents wishing to place their child in the care of Oaks Nursery. Our staff can also access a range of discounts on our services such as event tickets, shopping in our Outlets and membership at the University’s Sports Centre. We also provide an access to Private Health Care and free NUS Extra card to all our staff, which enables the holder to save on average £500 per year with companies such as Spotify, Topshop and Dominos.
Our company pension is very generous; staff contribute 6% of their salary and we add an additional 13% on top. We also go out of our way to recognise our staff on a regular basis, through our GEM ‘’Go the Extra Mile’ scheme, or celebrating their birthdays and work anniversaries.
